Step One:

We began last week with the first of the four steps to creating your holiday experience: Making a Plan. Hopefully, you are well on your way to creating your list and implementing some of the things on it. If not, it’s not too late to begin. A wise person once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Remember that this year we’re not going to let the holidays happen to us, we’re going to let the holidays happen for us.

Step Two:

Clear the Clutter. What does clearing clutter have to do with preparing for the holidays? Clearing clutter removes external confusion and obstruction, creates a sense of calm, more space, and lightens, uplifts and energizes us. What better way to begin holiday time than by donating unused items, furniture, and clothes to a charitable organization? With a clean, clear slate you can feel relaxed, opening the way to new ideas and inspiration. Start with the kitchen, which is the heart of the home. Go through drawers, cabinets, pantry, refrigerator and freezer and remove any unwanted, broken or unusable items. Get rid of small and large appliances that no longer work, or get them fixed so that you can use them. The kitchen can be a grab bag for attracting clutter. Commit to letting go of whatever is no longer of use. Move onto the living room and dining area, getting rid of old magazines, newspapers and decorative items that don’t make you smile.

Think: Discard, Recycle, Donate!

Next, clear the bathrooms by sorting through cabinets and under the sink. If you have many unused personal products, such as soaps, lotions and cleaning products, discard or give them away. Lastly, tackle the bedrooms and closets. Remove any worn out bedding and towels. Sort through drawers and closets getting rid of old or unused clothing or shoes. Someone else may enjoy those items that no longer fit or feel flattering on you. Having a hard time getting started? Set a timer for 30 minutes and notice the progress you make. Keep re-setting it until you’ve accomplished your goal. Love yourself enough to let go of anything that no longer represents your best self or the person you aspire to be. Give yourself the holiday gift of lighter living!
